3 Oton : Andhika

On Sunday, Andhika, our youngest son, had to observe Otonan, just like Akira and Wisnu previously.

Otonan is a Balinese religious birthday celebration where the ceremony is conducted according to Balinese calendar : every 210 days. This ceremony is categorized as Manusia Yadnya which aims at repenting the person's misdeeds in his/her former lives to be able to retain a perfect life --as Balinese believe in Reincarnation.

Here are some glimpse of the procession.

The parents are considered in "cuntaka" (impure) state after delivering the baby, therefore a special ceremony is conducted to purify the parents.

Andhika touched the ground for the first time and got into the chicken's bar. Though he seemed too big to be under the bars, he enjoyed this attention-getter occasion as it invited laughter and comments from our relatives.

For this ceremony, we have to prepare a pair of chicken --one black male and one white female as one of the processions. After the ceremony the chicken were freed, but they kept on lingering around Andhika until the ceremony was over.

While the priest was murmuring some prayers, Andhika was busy pointing at the chicken as he was eager to chase them around our front yard.

In any occasion such this, the best thing is that it is some kind of family and friends gathering. From the newly-wed couple to the the hardly-ever-show-up family, all tried to come. We had good people, good food and good talk ! It would have to take along time and another good reason to bring them back together later.

Above all, we just wish Andhika the best luck, good health, long life and success.
